How Do I Get Internet ….at Home in the United Kingdom is the first in a series to show you various ways of getting the internet.
In order to get the internet at home, you’ll need to get an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and some kind of device to connect to the service (usually through a telephone line). ISPs usually provide a router to let you connect to the internet and share an internet connection over a local area network. If you have a router, you can connect more than one computer in your house to the broadband service at the same time. These can be connected with cables or, more often these days, wirelessly.
How Do I Get Internet has provided a list of ISPs below but there are other options for you to choose one. One of the best places to look for an ISP is the Internet Service Provider Association (ISPA). This is a voluntary body but it is recognised as the industry authority and all ISPs listed on there are bound to certain standards set by the ISPA. You can therefore be confident an ISP listed by ISPA has good business practice.
How Do I Get Internet highly recommends asking friends and family for a recommendation for an ISP. There’s no substitute for first-hand experience so go around and ask everyone you know who they use and if they have had good experiences with them. You will find that a few will use the same one which will help you make your decision.
If you plan to go it alone with your decision, make sure you have thoroughly researched the various options that ISP’s provide.
Here is How Do I Get Internet’s checklist on what to look out for:
What is offered in the package provided by the ISP?
You will have to decide what you will be using the internet for. Will you just be using it for searching and checking email? If this is the case, How Do I Get Internet suggests that you look for a “Light User” package. Your ISP will provide you with a low usage (bandwidth) package but this can save you a considerable amount of money. On the other hand, you may want to download a lot of films or other files. If this is the case you want to look for a “Heavy User” or unlimited package.
This also applied to the speed offered. The higher the speed, the faster you will be able to download files and stream video.
Equipment
Does the ISP provide you with all the equipment you need to get started? Most do nowadays but it’s worth checking first. You also have to check that the service will work with your type of computer and software that you have (again, the ISP will usually provide this).
Building your own website
Some ISP’s offer some web space as part of the package. If you wish to build your own website it may be worth thinking about this.
Technical support
If you feel that you are going to need a lot of help, choose an ISP that gives free technical support. Many ISP’s keep their costs low by offering a premium support line. Avoid these if you are going to need help (unless you have a knowledgeable relative!)
